People buy homes here to enjoy all four brilliant seasons. The Poconos has a reputation for being quiet, simple, yet fun and family-friendly. Popular vacation homes include A-frames, cabins and cottages - either in the woods or lakeside. In addition to the woodlands and mountains, there are over 150 lakes, and three main rivers in the Poconos.
The Poconos encompass four Pennsylvania Counties: Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne. The region also touches the more populated areas of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties, and boasts a number of quaint small towns.
Poconos is a Native American word that means, "stream between two mountains," referring to the Delaware River which cuts a gap between two mountains. Many of the Poconos' towns date back to 1733, originally inhabited by large Native American Indian populations. In its earlier years, the area served as a mining and lumber region that provided coal and wood to growing metropolitan areas such as New York and Boston.
