Overview for Playa del Carmen

Vacation and second homes abound in Playa del Carmen. Why? Because Playa del Carmen is a central exploration point for the entire Yucatan Peninsula coast. It is also a place where the traveler can mingle with the local population while still enjoying the glamour of some of the world's most fabulous beaches.

"Playa," as locals call it, is located on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, about forty miles south of Cancun. Beloved for its white beaches, gentle surf and outdoor activities, this once sleepy fishing village has retained its small-town charm. Buildings are low-rise, and the atmosphere is still largely authentic.

When the sun goes down in Playa, the temperature goes up. Bars get into full swing around midnight, and Avenida Quinta transforms from a family-friendly pedestrian street to a sizzling hot spot.

The town's port is a primary access point to the beautiful island of Cozumel, just a short ferry or seaplane ride away. The port area is also a debarkation point for many cruise ships whose passengers flock here to enjoy bargaining at the open-air market, or to explore nearby Xel-ha and Tulum.

The expanding resort zone is dotted here and there with remnants of ancient Mayan structures reminiscent of the great civilization that once populated the region. Along the town's bustling Quinta Avenida, or "Fifth Avenue," visitors and residents enjoy restaurants and open-air cafes offering culinary delights. Typical fare ranges from traditional Mexican dishes to international and fusion cuisine. Handcrafted arts and goods are offered by artisans on the streets, or in the many shops and galleries lining the tourist area near the beach.

West of the downtown avenues - further off the beaten path - you will find a more authentic Playa Del Carmen.  Here you can see the real life of the town, with fantastic low-key restaurants and shops that offer clothing and goods for prices far more reasonable than those on the Quinta Avenida strip. At least a basic command of Spanish will help you in the areas of town outside the resort center.
